Trauma Therapy
At KLC Pediatric Therapy, our approach to trauma therapy for children and teens is deeply rooted in understanding that trauma can manifest in diverse ways, often subtly impacting a child's development, behavior, and emotional well-being. We create a safe, compassionate, and predictable environment where young individuals can begin to process their experiences and build resilience. Our therapists are trained in trauma-informed care, meaning they recognize the widespread impact of trauma and understand potential paths for recovery, shifting the focus from "What's wrong with you?" to "What happened to you?"
Understanding Trauma in Children and Teens:
Trauma in young people can stem from a wide range of experiences, not just major catastrophic events. It can include:
Acute trauma: Single, overwhelming events like accidents, natural disasters, medical emergencies, or witnessing violence.
Chronic trauma: Repeated and prolonged exposure to highly stressful events, such as ongoing abuse (physical, emotional, sexual), neglect, domestic violence, or living in unsafe environments.
Complex trauma: Often a result of chronic trauma experienced in early childhood within caregiving relationships, leading to widespread developmental impacts.
Developmental trauma: Trauma occurring during critical periods of development, affecting brain architecture and the ability to regulate emotions and form secure attachments.
Loss and Grief: The death of a loved one, particularly a parent or primary caregiver, can be profoundly traumatic.
Systemic Trauma: Experiences like bullying, discrimination, or chronic stress from living in poverty.
These experiences can lead to a variety of symptoms, including anxiety, depression, anger, behavioral issues, difficulty with emotional regulation, sleep disturbances, intrusive thoughts or nightmares, social withdrawal, and academic struggles. Children may also regress in behavior or exhibit hypervigilance.
What Trauma Therapy Looks Like at KLC Pediatric Therapy:
Our trauma therapy programs are highly individualized and flexible, recognizing that each child's healing journey is unique. We integrate evidence-based approaches to effectively address the multifaceted impact of trauma:
Establishing Safety and Trust: This is the paramount first step. Our therapists prioritize building a strong, trusting relationship with the child and their family. We ensure the therapeutic environment is physically and emotionally safe, predictable, and welcoming, allowing the child to feel secure enough to explore difficult feelings.
Psychoeducation: We help both the child and their caregivers understand what trauma is, how it affects the brain and body, and common reactions to traumatic events. This demystifies their experiences, normalizes their feelings, and reduces self-blame, fostering a sense of shared understanding.
Emotional Regulation Skills: A core component of trauma therapy is teaching children and teens practical, age-appropriate skills to manage intense emotions like anger, fear, and sadness. This includes techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation, grounding exercises, and identifying coping strategies that work for them.
Cognitive Processing: We gently guide children and teens in processing their traumatic memories. This often involves helping them to safely recall and discuss the event, challenge distorted or unhelpful thoughts related to the trauma (e.g., "It was my fault," "The world isn't safe"), and develop more balanced and realistic perspectives. Techniques like Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) are often utilized, which includes components for gradual exposure to traumatic memories in a safe, controlled way.
Narrative Building: For many children, trauma disrupts their sense of self and their life story. Therapy helps them integrate the traumatic experience into their personal narrative in a way that promotes healing and growth, rather than it remaining an overwhelming, isolated event.
Restoring a Sense of Control and Empowerment: Trauma often leaves individuals feeling helpless and powerless. Our therapy empowers children and teens by helping them identify their strengths, make choices within the therapeutic process, and develop a sense of agency over their reactions and future.
Parent/Caregiver Involvement: We believe that the family plays a crucial role in a child's healing. We often involve parents or caregivers in therapy, providing them with education about trauma, strategies for supporting their child at home, and guidance on managing their own stress related to the child's trauma. This strengthens family bonds and creates a more supportive home environment.
Addressing Specific Challenges: We tailor our approach to the specific manifestations of trauma, whether it presents as:
Anxiety: Helping children identify triggers and employ coping strategies.
Behavioral Issues & Impulse Control: Understanding behaviors as responses to trauma and teaching alternative, healthy reactions.
Depression: Addressing feelings of hopelessness and promoting engagement in life.
Social Skills: Supporting children in re-engaging with peers and rebuilding trust in relationships.
ADHD-like Symptoms: Differentiating between ADHD and trauma-related symptoms (e.g., difficulty focusing due to hypervigilance) and providing targeted strategies.
Adoption and Foster Care Challenges: Special consideration is given to the unique complexities of attachment, loss, and identity that can arise from these experiences, supporting children in processing their past and building secure connections.
Relapse Prevention and Future Resilience: As therapy progresses, we focus on helping children develop a toolkit of skills they can continue to use to manage future stressors and maintain their well-being, building long-term resilience.
At KLC Pediatric Therapy, our commitment is to walk alongside children and teens on their healing journey, providing expert, compassionate care that helps them move beyond the impact of trauma and discover their innate capacity for strength, connection, and a fulfilling life.

"In every child and teen, there's a powerful story waiting to unfold. Our counseling services are here to help them write chapters of resilience, growth, and self-discovery, turning challenges into stepping stones toward a brighter future."
Our Approach to Addressing Unique Challenges:
At KLC Pediatric Therapy, we recognize that every child and teen's situation is unique. Our therapists utilize a variety of tailored techniques and evidence-based practices, including:
Individualized Treatment Plans: No two children are alike. We develop personalized plans that consider each child's age, developmental stage, personality, and specific challenges.
Family Involvement: We believe that parental and family involvement is crucial for lasting change. We often include parents in sessions, providing guidance, education, and strategies to support their child's progress at home and improve family dynamics.
Emphasis on Coping Skills and Emotional Regulation: A core focus of our therapy is to empower young individuals with practical tools to manage their emotions, stress, and difficult situations independently.
Collaboration: We work collaboratively with parents, schools, and other professionals (such as pediatricians or psychiatrists) to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated approach to care.
By empowering children and teens with essential skills and a deeper understanding of themselves, KLC Pediatric Therapy helps them navigate life's challenges with greater confidence, well-being, and a stronger foundation for future success.
